New R.D. for 2013
Hi trail runners,
I, as founder and R.D. of the DiezVista 50km Trail Run, along with the current race committee, Martha, Bruce & Gail, are all so excited to announce that Wendy Montgomery will be taking over the reins of the DV effective immediately.
Wendy’s enormous energy and vast experience as a trail runner, race director and race volunteer will allow the Diez Vista 50km Trail Run, as one of BC’s premier ultra events, to move forward in good hands.
Martha and Bruce will continue to support the DV and work with Wendy in her new role. As well, Gail and I will act as advisors, as required, during this transition year.
We invite everyone, runners, volunteers and race fans alike, to continue the tremendous support which you have shown the DV in the past, to your new R.D Wendy.
Gail and I would like to thank all of you for your amazing support of the DV over the past 16 years and we wish Wendy sunny skies and dry trails.
Cheers,
George

The 2013 race is FULL, capping out the entries in three days. Thanks to all the runners for their support !!

The rapid entry rate was a huge surprise. How thrilling it is to see the ultra community grow and fill the race so quickly like so many other races have over the past years. This is a huge contrast to the past several years at DV, which barely had enough signups in March to break even in race costs. This is a huge vote of support for Wendy, the new DV RD - thank you.
The 150 starter limit is fixed due to trail permits from the various property managers who are sharing the parks. The decision to have a small waitlist was based past years’ experience, where about 15% of entrants for whatever reason would not start. This keeps the start list at full capacity and reduces the uncertainty and disappointment for some if the list was too long.
The overwhelming support is inspiring to the race committee, who will continue to work hard to host an event for runners by runners, and who look forward to improvements to the entry process next year. It is a shame that some people missed out on entering this year and we hope to see you next year. If you are not racing, please come out and be a part of the event as a volunteer to support ultra trailrunning in BC and your fellow athletes. Please email Wendy through the link at the UltraSignup web page if you can help with the event.

DIEZ VISTA TRAIL CLEARING DAY - Sun March 10, 2013. Meet at 8:30am in the Equestrian parking lot (Aid Station #4). Please be prepared with weather appropriate clothing, water, lunch and work gloves. We expect the trail clearing day, including hiking in and out, will take about 5-6 hours. This would be a great recovery hike for those who are running Dirty Duo the day before, an opportunity for those who are successful in the Knee Knacker lottery to earn some volunteer hour credits and good Karma for all you Diez Vista runners. The project will be restricted to clearing blow downs and/or branches from the trail. If you have hand tools (bow saw, axe, hatchet, loppers, etc) which will fit in your day pack please bring them along. Please do not bring children or pets for safety reasons. Thanks.
Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to March 10.
Many thanks in advance from your race committee and all the runners who will be forever thankful on race day!!

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Ken Cretelli on Dec 15, 2012 at the age of 74. Ken was an accomplished ultra-runner, marathon runner, carver and Diez Vista pioneer. Ken, Earl Preeper, George and Gail Forshaw were the very first committee for the Diez Vista Trail Run in 1997. Ken was involved every year since then as a volunteer, most notably for re-building the table at aid station #1 every year and, in 2011, for carving the 15 year finisher walking staffs for Judy & Peter.
There will be a Celebration of Ken’s life held on April 20, 2013 from 3 to 5 pm at the Wilson Center in Port Coquitlam.

Please do not pack items that will spill. One drop bag per participant. Drop bags will be limited to a maximum of 5 lbs. Bags will be delivered to Aid Station #3 Buntzen South. Drop Bags will be brought back to the finish line after the final runner passes through this exchange point.

There are 6 aid stations on the course. Be aware you may not find exactly what you want at the aid stations. Please equip your drop bag accordingly. We will do our best to supply a variety of items that may include fruit, candy, gels, chips, pretzels, soda, etc. Each aid station will have a small supply of Band-Aids and Vaseline.
There will a limited number of gels available. The foods that are generally available are: salt replacement foods (pretzels, chips), fruits (oranges, bananas, melons), potatoes, cookies, candies, etc.
RACE ROUTE
The Diez Vista run course cuts through Belcarra Regional Park and the Buntzen Lake Recreation Area. These are popular recreation areas, frequented by many other users who may not be aware of the race. It is of utmost importance that we show courtesy and respect to other trail users so as to minimize any disruption. All trash must be properly thrown out in aid station garbage bags. Do not litter!
WILDLIFE HAZARDS
Bears, coyotes and other potentially dangerous wildlife live on the course and have surprised runners in the past. Keep alert and be careful where you place your feet and hands. Please stay on the trail at all times.
RACE PROCEEDS
We are a volunteer run event and all proceeds go to Lower Mainland area community groups.

Spectator Directions
How can your Mom watch you accomplish this great feat??
Spectators or Crew can access aid station #3 and #4 easily and, of course, the start/finish at Sasamat Lake. Please note that a crew may provide assistance to their runner at aid station locations only.
I have attached a link to the Buntzen Lake Rec map brochure which shows all the roads and trails in the area.
The small blue map on the back of the brochure shows how to get to the Buntzen Lake Park from Lougheed/Hwy 7.
If you study the main map inset, you will see the main parking area. The beach area nearby has a "picnic shelter". This is aid station #3 (23km for runners). Runners will be coming through here from 9:25am until 12:00pm.
After you see your runner there, you can simply drive a little ways back along the park road (~ 2km) to the 'equestrian staging area' parking lot which is the location of aid station #4 (shown on the larger map but still within the park boundaries) (7 km later for runners)
If you want to see runners at the finish line, you need to drive around to Sasamat Lake, which is about a 15 minute drive away from Buntzen Lake. Sasamat Lake is shown on the small blue map on the brochure. It is not labelled but the road names are labelled. Sasamat is the small circular lake just southwest of Buntzen on that map.
Aid stations #1, #2 and #6 are accessible to spectators and crew but only if they hike in to them. Please refer to the ‘course description’ page for the written directions of the hike.
